Frugal in Portland - I'm Buying a Condo in Portland!

At Frugal in Portland Kathleen is celebrating her upcoming purchase of a beautiful condo in Portland. Her story has an interesting twist to it. Someone who reads her blog provided some assistance.

Last week, I was out-of-town attending to the only business that really matters, family business. But of course, I was never very far away from my computer, and Andi sent me an email. “Hey, so that condo you loved? It’s now FHA approved. I know you said you didn’t want to buy, but I thought I should check with you anyway.”

5 Steps to help sell your home faster

home for sale

Even in the best housing market selling a home is one of the most stressful experiences you can go through, especially if you have children, pets or both. We sold our last home right after the housing market started to crumble. It was in an area that had seen a lot of foreclosures, the neighborhood was looking a little seedy and the city was about to start construction on an outer belt loop that would cut right behind our house. Not exactly a promising scenario, but we sold our home in eight days for several thousand above our minimum acceptable offer.
Our home sold so quickly because we followed a basic five-step process to get it ready for market. First, we packed up all of our personal belongings and moved them to a rental storage unit. After moving everything out, we scrubbed our home from top to bottom. Next we painted and did a few minor repairs and finally we staged our home so that it looked like a model home.

12 Tips for Decluttering Your Home

household clutter

When it comes to accumulating too much stuff, most baby boomers are trained experts. Our Depression era grandparents and parents taught us to save everything in case we could reuse it later. The society that ushered us into adulthood encouraged us to buy bigger and better stuff and to be the first on the block to own the latest electronic gadget on the market. As soon as the Depression Era ‘save everything’ habit collided with the Accumulation Era ‘buy everything’ habit, we were doomed.
Please join me over at Beating Broke for my tips and tricks to help declutter your home and life. Thanks to Beating Broke for hosting our guest post.

Cash Flow Mantra offers a rundown of the differences between a Mac and a PC and hosts a surprisingly civil discussion on the matter.
Money Quote

Whatever you prioritize when choosing your computer, go with your instinct for what will suit you best. Remember, you’re the one that will be stuck with either the Apple or the PC! When it comes down to it, what’s most important is that your new computer is one you’re happy with.

How to Hire a Contractor

Hiring a contractor

This past year a storm blew a small amount of trim off the front of our home. Usually, I like to repair things myself, but this would involve a tall ladder since the piece of trim reached the upper peak of our second story. Not only do we not own a ladder that tall, but I don't plan to climb a ladder that tall. My days of daredevel stunts are long behind me! You can read about my misadventures with hiring a contractor at BlueCollarWorkman.com.
Big thanks to TB over at BlueCollarWorkman. He writes regularly about personal finance from a blue collar workman's perspective and he is always entertaining.

Make your own cleaning supplies & Save

homemade cleaning supplies

After finding the time to clean, my biggest problem is the toxic smell left behind from store bought cleaning products. The smell isn't the only problem. Many of these products are adding toxic chemicals to our water supply. Those products that are advertised "as green" or "non toxic," are typically not cheap.
After some research and experimentation, I came up with some simple formulas for cleaning products that you can make safely at home. For about thirty dollars, you can have all the cleaning supplies you'll need for a year. Below is a shopping list and a guide for how to make your own cleaning products.
Let us know how it works and if you have any other 'cheap and green' cleaning tips.

Windows 8 Sales a disaster- hurray for laptop bargain hunters!

Windows 8

Windows 8, Microsoft's latest installment, has been suffering terrible sales since its release. In response, Microsoft is dropping the price of Windows to manufactures from $120 to just $30 - meaning all Windows laptops should go down in price by around $90.
Furthermore, a new version of Windows is expected in August, which will render Windows 8 old news - driving prices down further. The poor demand has been keeping laptop prices low for some time now, as manufacturers struggle to shift stock.
